Survival in College by Yasmin Moses

As I embark on the next stages of my academic career, I have met some incredible professors and former classmates who have become my peers here at Miami-Dade College-north that have become like family to me, and have kept me motivated through my turbulences and fears in completing my program,. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the College Prep Department and Reflections Magazine editors Professors Marlene Cueto and Bert Lorenzo. Thank You for inspiring me and helping me coordinate the first college prep poetry contest, and in instilling good values and etiquette in preparing for the college life. I wish you all the best, may God Bless you all. It has been a rewarding road to continue successfully in college; therefore, sharing this appropriate editorial for future students who enroll in college prep courses has come at the appropriate time when it can be useful to others because it has helped me in the regular college courses and will continue to do so in the future.

There are many survival tips for college students; however, I would like to share a couple of my own that I believe will be helpful from a student’s perspective. Here are my top 4:

  1. Plan: Often I found many of my classmates cramming for tests, and trying to fit in their work and class schedules to study. If you have a daily routine where you work and attend school, take a 20 minute break for yourself. Plan your day according to what classes you have the next day, and 2 or 3 weeks prior to study for an exam.

  1. Focus: If you are taking more than 2 classes each semester, you should focus on those classes individually. For example if you have classes Monday through Friday, and you also work, wherever you are at a specific time focus on that place and time. Don’t wonder about tomorrow’s class, or schedule unless you have an exam.

  1. Stay calm: Remember the only way you cannot make rational decisions throughout your semesters in college is if you panic! When worse comes to worse just stay level –headed, and you’ll get through everything just fine.

  1. Never say “I can’t”: I’ve learned from many of my College-Prep Professors that you should never utter the words “I can’t” because “You can”! If you think negative then negative outcomes will come to you. Never limit yourself in the possible things you can do.

The Disability by Ms. Yasmin Moses

I have a disability.

It is not visible; therefore, you would never know if you saw me walking down the street!

It is not rare, but it is gives me motivation.

This disability challenges my learning.

It does not define me, but it does hurt me!

It is an agonizing pain that is consistently in the back of my mind.

It has broken my understanding and gives me no remorse.

This is a silent disability that only surfaces when it's time to calculate, read, or write.

It is defined as dyscalculia, dyslexia, and dyscraphia…

The worst part of this disability is it has been a part of my life for a long time.

Yet, in retrospect, it is a disability that I have learned to make an ability.

I have failed and succeeded through it.

Many try to understand, but they simply do not!

I must admit it has driven me to conquer my fears, fear of learning…

The disability arrived well in stride when I reached college, and still exists to this day!

The dream overcame the disability and made college possible,

because I made this disability, an ability within me!

Dedicated to those who learn differently, always remember a disability, is an ability!

I Stand Beside Nature by Ms. Yasmin Moses

I stand on the floor that is man-made!

I breathe the air that’s supposed to be fresh and clear!

I walk on the rich green grass.

I sit next to a tired animal waiting to be heard!

As I live each day…I care for the smaller voices.

The ones who have no say!

The shrubs yell to be clasped by the hands of a caring-person.

The nature…we belong to yearns for help!

Time is not courteous…it does not stop!

I stand beside nature…

People walk by …looking, nearing to the end of the day!

The wall is as white as an angel’s wing!

The sky is blue as sea that is beneath me!

If I stand beside nature…will you see the face that it gives...sadness?

I stand beside nature worried, concerned, and frustrated

Like nature, I worry…what is going to happen in 20 years from now, to this place I call home!

Nature has no voice; therefore, my voice is nature’s voice!

Brave by Ms. Yasmin Moses

Strength, wisdom, courage;

No one can deny these three words, if you are Brave!

Keep your dreams alive…

Live fearlessly…

Change only when you are ready!

Take a risk and chance!

Be Brave!

Everyone has that special gift!

Have you found it yet?

Be the Brave woman, or man that you are!

Before you realize it… the goal you have tried to achieve stands right beside you!

In the strength, wisdom, and courage that molds your bravery.

Brave is who you are, just find it within!

The Challenge

If everyday is uncertain, then who knows what tomorrow brings?

If every animal could be saved, then our world would be a better place.

If I give a challenge would you try something new?

I guarantee the reward is greater than what your expectations are.

If we give up too easily, then life itself would be a piece of cake!

Take this walk, leap, or drive, but I give you this challenge…

The challenge is not hard, nor does it require anything drastic.

However, in the end our lives would be simple, optimistic, and rewarding.

If we say who others ideally think of us, then prove it…

The challenge is not a requirement, but a request…

It’s more- so a routine that you would get used to; a test of character and strength.

I try to accomplish the challenge best to my ability…

Are you ready? ...

The challenge is TO BE YOU, AND LIVE LIFE!!

A Father To Remember by Yasmin Moses

If you ever lost a person, which you were close to…

A person who can never be replaced…

Who is the important figure in your world!
A father is who this person is…

One can only remember the good and bad times.

The moments you will never forget, and the times you shared as a father and daughter.

A father to remember, as the years pass, one can only dream of what he is missing out.

The day comes when he will not be there to walk you down the aisle, or he will never meet the special someone that you would like to share your life with.

The memories still remain, but the pain will never go away.

A father to remember, if yesterday could replay; one could only hope and pray that God never called you home.

A father to remember the day will come when we will meet again.

But, for now my memories will be in my heart and one day I will see you again.

Miles in These Shoes by Yasmin Moses

Can you really walk in someone’s shoes?
Underestimated by the abilities one can accomplish,

Obstacles one has faced, achieved by perseverance…

Persistence gives a reward in the end…

Many say: “I’ve walked in your shoes”!

Really, as the doors closes on obstacles faced…

Another one opens to obstacles reached.

Miles in these shoes, you cannot do!

We all walk our own paths,

Cross our own barriers,

Climb for success!

Giving up is not an option!

One conquers the fears of the unknown.

The Miles walked in these shoes are long, sometimes tiresome!

Miles in these shoes, you cannot do!

Strengthening with lessons learned…

I cannot walk in your shoes either, so you can't attempt to walk in mine…

But, Miles in these shoes simply no one can do!
